The world is still digesting what happened last week. Radical, shocking, angular, brave, ugly, polarizing, futuristic, functional, revolutionary.. You can say many things about the Tesla Cybertruck, positive and negative. But one thing is sure, we will be talking about it in 25 years as the vehicle that sparked a revolution in car design.

In the meantime, 250k people (and counting) reserved the truck without knowing when the actual production will really start or if the truck is even street legal in its current form. That's at least a validation of the design. Or maybe it's a validation of the idea of a truck with amazing specs, a reasonable price and a very basic design.

New chinese backed EV startup SF Motors revealed their mid-sized SF5 and full sized SF7 SUVs. Here are some of the key information:

- Both the SF5 and the SF7 can be configured to have a power train based on one to four electric motors.
- In four electric motors configuration, the power output will be 1000 Hp and allows a 0 to 60 mph (98 km/h) time below 3 seconds.
- The promised electric power range on a single charge is 300 miles (480 kilometers).
- Martin Eberhard, Tesla's co-founder is now SF Motors' chief innovation officer.
- The production of the SF5 model is expected to start in 2019. Preorder will be possible later this year.
BMW revealed details about its i4 electric vehicle that would become a direct competitor to Tesla's model S. Here are some new facts:
- The production version s expected to debut as soon as 2020.
- BMW is expecting a range between 340 and 435 miles (550-700 kilometres) on a single charge. That is at least as good as the Tesla S 100D model.
- No information concerning the power train yet.
- The car pictured above is the i Vision Dynamics concept presented at Frankfurt last year. But the overall dimensions of the i4 are expected to remain faithful to the concept.

It won't be too long before we learn more about this car. Stay tuned.
Volkswagen is reportedly going to Pikes Peak with an electric hill climbing beast this year. Here is what we know so far:

- No specs have have been released so far and only renderings of the car are available.
- The car will be all wheel drive, which is expected for a course like Pikes Peak and even more coming from an EV.
- The existing electric car record at Pikes Peak stands at 8 minutes 57 seconds set by Tagima Monster's E-Runner in 2013.
- VW's latest PPIHC participation goes back to 1987.

Croatian EV company Rimac has unveiled the second generation of their high performance electric supercar. While on the outside the design looks like an evolution of the first generation, the power train promises previously unprecedented performance, second gen Tesla Roadster included:

- power comes from four electric motors with a total output of 1,914 hp and 1,696 pound-feet of torque.
- 0 to 60 mph (98 km/h) in 1.85 seconds
- top speed of 258 mph (415 mph)
- quarter mile time: 9.1 seconds
- 120-kWh battery pack with a promised range of 404 miles (650 km)
- it is able to recharge up to 80 percent of its capacity in under 30 minutes thanks to the 250-kW charging
- active aerodynamics elements: including front and rear diffusers, hood vents, rear wing, and underbody air intakes
- equipped with sensors that would eventually allow for Level 4 autonomous driving: eight cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 2 lidars and six radar units

Volkswagen is bringing a new EV concept to Geneva and they called it the I.D. Vizzzzzion.

Here is how Volkswagen sees the future:
- No steering wheel
- No pedals
- No controls or at least no buttons or touchscreens inside
- Function guaranteed through voice and gesture controls
- a combined output of 302 Hp coming from two motors (front and rear axle)
- 400 miles range (650 km)
- IKEA carpet inside the car

Expected to arrive between 2020 and 2022. If this is Volkswagen's answer to all the autonomous smart concept cars popping around then I like their sense of humor. If this is really the future, then I am not sure I like it.
Traditional automakers are getting in the EV business. And it's good for everyone. Today we get a first glimpse at the production version of the Jaguar I-Pace all electric cross over. And it looks gorgeous.

Here are the key figures (*):
- Battery is a 90 kWh with an estimated 240 miles (390 km) range,
- Zero to 80 percent in just 40 minutes at 100kW DC fast charging stations
- Two electric motors one on each axel with a combined output of 394 Hp
- 0–60 mph (98 km/h) in 4.5 sec

(*) All according to Jaguar of course.

While some new EV startups struggle to make fully functioning prototypes, future Tesla models keep being spotted on public roads and on test tracks showing their capabilities. Like the Tesla Semi in the video above. Formula One's top teams are going crazy with their design for 2017 and we love it. First, Mercedes found a "loophole"in the regulations and came up with a T-wing mounted at the engine cover (not seen in the picture below). And now Ferrari, unveils its 2017 which features not only another interesting engine cover mounted wing, but a very radical side pod design. The two new features, alongside lots of new small details made us nearly forget about the nose tip that continues to be a trend for 2017 cars...

I don't know about you, but this makes me really (finally) excited about the new season. 29 days to go until Melbourne!

The new BMW M4 GTS.

The BMW M4 GTS gives BMW M GmbH a new and exclusive technological showpiece which elevates the potential of the BMW M4 Coupe to another impressive new level. With its powerful, motor sport-inspired looks and high-performance technology, the BMW M4 GTS has its sights set squarely on the race track. A lap time of 7.28 minutes around the legendary Nürburgring-Nordschleife, the world’s most exacting race circuit, is a clear statement of this special-edition model’s exceptional abilities. At the same time, the sharpest BMW M4 of all – like its BMW M stablemates – can also hold its own on public roads. BMW M GmbH is launching the BMW M4 GTS in a special edition limited to 700 units to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the BMW M3, which has been in production since 1986. In so doing, it is highlighting the innovative flair of the BMW M engineers in developing trailblazing M technologies on the powertrain, chassis and lightweight construction front. The first high-performance special edition in the M3/M4 model range will also be available for the first time in the important North American market.

“Special-edition models like the BMW M3 GT, BMW M3 CSL, BMW M3 GTS and BMW M3 CRT have a decades-long tradition in our mid-size line-up – and that continues with the BMW M4,” says Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “They sharpen the character of the BMW M brand and embody an emotionally rich and exclusive driving experience. We’ve taken a radical route with the set-up of the BMW M4 GTS to create a sports machine for the race track that delivers top-end dynamics and inspirational performance. It allows us to demonstrate what is possible today with a road-legal car. Owners can drive their BMW M4 GTS to circuits such as Spa-Francorchamps, the Nürburgring or Laguna Seca – for clubsport events, for example – and then set lap times there that raise the bar to extremely high levels for road-legal cars.”

Performance boost courtesy of innovative water injection.

At the heart of each and every BMW M model is its engine. The BMW M4 GTS uses the multi-award-winning six-cylinder in-line turbo engine from the BMW M3/M4, but adds innovative water injection technology to give the 3.0-litre unit a substantial power boost. The water injection system raises the engine’s output significantly – to 368 kW/500 hp – and increases torque to 600 Nm (442 lb-ft), yet still keeps fuel economy and CO2 emissions at the level of the BMW M4 Coupe (8.3 litres per 100 km* [34 mpg imp], 194 g/km*). This makes the BMW M4 GTS the most agile, radical and dynamically potent model in the range. It races from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 3.8 seconds and hits a limited top speed of 305 km/h (189.5 mph).

Lightweight design extends into the details.

Intelligent lightweight construction allows the BMW M engineers to limit the car’s DIN kerb weight to 1,510 kilograms (ECE kerb weight: 1,585 kg). Its outstanding weight-to-power ratio of 3.0 kg/hp provides the perfect platform for a highly dynamic driving experience. The rigorous weight-saving measures extend through both the interior and exterior of the car. Inside, carbon-fibre bucket seats, a lightweight centre console, the lightweight construction of the rear seat panelling and boot area partition, and special lightweight door and side panel trim, including door pull loops in place of solid door handles, are clearly visible indications of the designers’ commitment to weight-saving. The rigorous application of lightweight design can also be seen in details that are out of view. The instrument panel bracing tube is made from lightweight carbon fibre. And on the outside of the car, the newly designed bonnet, roof and adjustable front splitter are also constructed from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). The adjustable rear wing, too, is cut from this light but extremely durable high-tech material. It rests on intricate, CNC-machined aluminium mounts fixed to the CFRP boot lid which likewise demonstrate how every detail, no matter how small, has been honed to minimise weight. Teaming up with the diffuser – again, made from carbon fibre – below the rear bumper, the rear wing optimises the flow of air and reduces lift at the rear axle. The exhaust system has a titanium muffler, which allows a weight saving of 20 per cent. Its emotionally rich soundtrack fits the M profile perfectly and envelops the inside and outside of the car in the ambience of the race track.

Performance-maximising equipment features.

The standard-fitted seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) selects the optimum ratio for every driving situation with no interruption in the flow of power as it makes its way to the rear wheels. The driver can also select gears manually using either shift paddles on the steering wheel or the selector lever. The Drivelogic shift programs and Launch Control have been retuned to the engine’s increased output. The weight-minimised, exclusive M light-alloy wheels in star-spoke 666 M Styling are forged and polished, and come in Acid Orange. They are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres (front: 265/35 R19, rear: 285/30 R20) which are adapted specifically to the BMW M4 GTS and therefore play a role in the car’s outstanding mechanical traction and feedback through corners.

The three-way M coilover suspension specially tuned for the BMW M4 GTS can be adjusted to individual tastes and therefore also to the demands of different race circuits. The lightweight M carbon ceramic brakes offer a well-defined pressure point and ensure outstanding deceleration even under sustained heavy loads, such as at the limit on the race track.

World-exclusive OLED technology, brilliant LED light.

The familiar two sets of twin circular headlights with four corona rings ensure the best possible illumination of the road surface. They combine cutting-edge LED (light-emitting diode) technology with BMW Selective Beam (dazzle-free high beam assistant) and Adaptive Headlights.

The L-shaped rear lights are just as distinctive as the design of the headlights. Indeed, innovative OLED rear lights will make their series-production debut in the BMW M4 GTS. OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) are a new kind of light source that light up over their full surface with a very homogeneous effect – unlike LED units, which emit their light in the form of points. The flat design of OLEDs (they measure just 1.4 millimetres in height) and the ability to trigger individual light modules separately open up fresh possibilities for lighting concepts and exudes the presence of exceptional precision. As such, the tail lights underline the width of the rear end, lend the car an even more eye-catching and powerful appearance and ensure it cuts a stand-out figure in both the light and dark.

The interior – focused, exclusive and committed to motor sport.

The carbon-fibre M bucket seats for the driver and passenger stick firmly with the lightweight construction theme inside the pure-bred, exclusive interior. They weigh around 50 per cent less than the sports seats in the BMW M4 Coupe, enable an ideal seating position and offer compelling long-distance comfort to go with their unbeatable levels of support. The exclusive Alcantara/Merino leather seat covering along with M stripes in the backrests, three-point seat belts and door pull loops highlight the profile of the BMW M4 GTS as a high-performance sports machine as well as the car’s standalone character. The M4 GTS is fitted with different bucket-style M sports seats (including lightweight backrests with cut-outs) for the North American market, in line with local registration requirements.

The exclusive material Alcantara is also used for the M sports steering wheel, whose “12 o’clock” marker underlines the racing character of the BMW M4 GTS. In place of a rear seat bench, the BMW M4 GTS features a glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) shelf and a rear panel in carbon-fibre sandwich construction. Both are covered in Alcantara, and together they enable a weight saving of around 40 per cent.

The optional Clubsport Package can further enhance the affinity of the BMW M4 GTS with the race track. It includes a roll bar in Acid Orange behind the front seats, a race-specification six-point harness** and a fire extinguisher.
P4Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16571847535463424397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1907793046437499012.post-32748005131483625242015-10-06T09:46:00.000+01:002015-10-06T09:49:37.600+01:00Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R Unveiled

Competition possesses a wealth of experience, technical know-how and a broad

network of specialized professional partners. These elements were crucial to conduct

such a large undertaking.

After nearly two years of comprehensive planning, intensive development and expert

fabrication of vehicle components, Callaway Competition completed the first C7 GT3-R

just a few weeks ago. Its striking design comes as a result of the collaboration between

Canadian designer Paul Deutschman and team owners Giovanni Ciccone and Ernst

Wöhr. Mike Gramke, Uwe Hoffmann, Florian Möhring and Andre Zanke were also

heavily involved in the vehicle’s development. Rüdiger Geckler coordinated the delivery

of all components and the detailed assembly work was taken on by Herbert Schürg. All

of these people played a key role and are acknowledged for their hard work and

dedication.

The result is a GT3 racer built to meet all FIA rules and regulations. Powering the

Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R is a Chevrolet-based 6.2L V8 engine producing 600

horsepower, mated to an X-Trac 6-speed sequential gearbox with paddle-shift

technology. Having put the C7 GT3-R through its paces, the development team is proud

to report that it surpasses its predicted performance.

The new Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R's will take to the track starting in 2016, competing

with the world's fastest GT cars in a variety of racing series worldwide. The first C7 GT3-

R to be campaigned by Callaway Competition's in-house race team is sponsored by

Whelen Engineering of Chester, Connecticut, manufacturers of premium quality warning

and signaling devices.

"We wanted to set another milestone in our company’s history with our new design,

developing and constructing a future-proof vehicle that will be produced from 2016 and

used for many years to come. As a small, privately owned team, we knew from the

outset that approaching a project of this magnitude would be very daring. Therefore, first

and foremost, we have to thank our employees and partners who have made it possible

to finally set the C7 GT3-R on its wheels. Everyone has given more than 100% and we

truly can’t thank them enough. We can be proud of our performance to date and are

confident we will be rewarded with good results in the many races ahead," said Ernst

ON TRACK FOR GLORY: ASTON MARTIN VULCAN PREPARES FOR TAKE-OFF

Geneva global reveal for limited edition, track-only, 7.0-litre V12 supercar
Motorsport-developed technology for extreme on-track performance
Expert tuition, technical support and experience programme for owners

25 February 2015, Gaydon: Introducing the Aston Martin Vulcan – a track-only supercar and the British luxury brand’s most intense and exhilarating creation to date.

Born out of extensive motorsport experience – and using the brand’s acknowledged flair for design and engineering ingenuity – the 800-plus bhp, all-carbon fibre Aston Martin Vulcan promises truly extreme performance.

Uniquely for Aston Martin, the new supercar – limited to just 24 examples worldwide – will allow owners the opportunity to precisely tailor their track day experience through a graduating scale of detailed power and dynamic performance adjustments.

CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, said: “Aston Martin Vulcan is, by its very nature, a rare and thrilling supercar. Designed and engineered to deliver a genuinely bespoke driving experience that draws on our rich heritage, this car tailors its power and handling to both the capabilities of the driver and the characteristics of the track.

“A sports car for true sports car lovers, I believe the Aston Martin Vulcan – and the unique ownership programme that sits behind it – sets a whole new standard in the ultra-high luxury supercar class.”

Motorsport-inspired

Styled entirely in-house by the Aston Martin design team led by Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman, and with a design language hinting at the next generation of Aston Martin sports cars, this supercar is powered by the most potent iteration yet of the company’s naturally-aspirated, 7.0-litre V12 petrol engine.

With its 800-plus bhp powerplant developed in conjunction with Aston Martin Racing, this front mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car draws extensively on the brand’s rich GT motorsport experience.

Utilising the techniques of world-class motorsport engineering, the supercar sees its power-to-weight ratio exceed those of the GTE cars which compete in the FIA’s annual World Endurance Championship.

Comprising cutting edge engineering including that sourced from the brand’s successful GT racing campaign, the car features a carbon fibre monocoque and body constructed by Aston Martin’s long-term specialist body engineering and manufacturing partner Multimatic, integral limited-slip differential, magnesium torque tube with carbon fibre propeller shaft and Brembo racing calipers acting on carbon ceramic racing disc brakes which measure 380mm in diameter at the front and 360mm at the rear.

Drive is channelled to the 345/30 x19 rear wheels and Michelin race specification tyres through a race-bred rear mid-mounted Xtrac six-speed sequential shift gearbox.

Track-derived pushrod suspension with anti-dive geometry is complemented by Multimatic’s Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars front and rear, driver-adjustable anti-lock braking, and variable traction control.

The new track car will comply with all relevant FIA race safety requirements.

Aston Martin’s Director of Special Projects and Motorsport, David King, said: “Taking the extensive learning from our various successful racing programmes and applying it to this exceptional track car for customers has been an exciting and sometimes challenging task for the team here at Gaydon.

“Our deep and broad motorsport experience, allied to our renowned road car expertise, has allowed us to make the Aston Martin Vulcan the absolutely compelling proposition it is today.”

Fast-track training

Prior to taking delivery of their cars, owners will be offered the opportunity to take part in an extensive and detailed programme of intensive track driver training.

Experienced racers including Aston Martin Racing’s Le Mans-winning Darren Turner will support owners on their learning journey, offering them the chance to refine their track driving technique and increase their ability through a carefully-constructed series of practical and theoretical driver training events.

Using a number of exciting high performance Aston Martins including the V12 Vantage S and One-77 road cars and the Vantage GT4 race car, customers will gradually build experience and develop their track technique, before beginning their thrilling personal journeys into the immense performance potential of their Aston Martin Vulcan.

David King said: “We will be running a series of exclusive track day events commencing in 2016 that will offer the opportunity for these customers to explore their driving capabilities, and the car’s performance potential, on some of the world’s most famous and glamorous race circuits.”

There will also be the option of time in the virtual race car world of Darren Turner’s Base Performance Simulators, where buyers will have ample opportunity to further refine their driving style in the safety of the digital race track.

No longer the exclusive preserve of Formula 1, it is widely acknowledged that using a simulator can help prepare a driver for any race; improving technique and consistency as well as, ultimately, lap times.

Almost infinitely flexible in terms of colour and trim options, the exclusive new sports car will be offered to buyers through Aston Martin’s VIP sales programme, using the expertise and luxury customer service that is now a hallmark of the brand’s ‘Q by Aston Martin’ bespoke personalisation service.

Dr Palmer added: “We have already received strong interest from the customers we have spoken to about Aston Martin Vulcan.

“The cars will blend our traditional Aston Martin values of Power, Beauty and Soul with an unrivalled ownership experience; a unique combination that will guarantee their place in the brand’s rich and charismatic history.”

Performance data, together with further technical details about the ultra-exclusive track-only supercar, will be released closer to its track debut later this year.

The Aston Martin Vulcan will make its world debut on the brand’s new stand at the 85th Geneva International Motor Show (Hall 5 Stand 5253) at 10.15am on Tuesday March 3.
P4Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16571847535463424397noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1907793046437499012.post-88550132383033258532014-12-03T13:40:00.000+01:002014-12-03T13:40:22.976+01:00Ferrari FXX K Revealed

Maranello, 3rd December 2014 – Ferrari’s new FXX K research and development programme receives its world premiere next weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The laboratory-car is based on Maranello’s first hybrid model and will grace the world’s tracks from next year onwards. The K in its moniker is a reference to the “KERS” kinetic energy recovery system it adopts in maximising its track performance.

Unfettered by homologation and racing regulations, the FXX K will never be used in competition. It was, in fact, developed to be completely uncompromising, incorporating technological innovations that will guarantee an unprecedented driving experience to the exclusive group of Client-Test Drivers with whom the Prancing Horse will roll out a test programme over the coming two years.

The car’s enormous potential is attested to by two significant figures: a total power output of 1050 cv (860 cv delivered by its conventional V12 engine and 190 by its electric motor) and maximum torque in excess of 900 Nm.

The FXX K’s 6262 cc V12 features new camshafts and a modified valve train with mechanical rather than hydraulic tappets. The intake manifolds have been redesigned and given a special type of polishing treatment. The exhaust system has been modified as its silencers have been eliminated.

The HY-KERS system has been evolved specifically for pure performance with the result that the driver can control the function logics from the specific 4-setting Manettino on the centre console: Qualify, for maximum performance within a limited number of laps; Long Run to optimise performance consistency; Manual Boost for instant maximum torque delivery; and Fast Charge, for a fast recharge of the car’s battery.

A focus on delivering maximum efficiency at every stage of every track lap has resulted in extensive but integrated work on the entire car body in terms of both active and passive aerodynamics.

The front of the car is dominated by a twin-profile spoiler and a larger splitter, which is 30 mm lower, with a gap in its centre. This design is an application of the concepts developed to improve aero balance in the GT category of the WEC, which Ferrari has won for three consecutive years. Two pairs of vertical elements, an endplate and, externally, a dive plane, together with vertical fins channel the air towards the car’s flanks, generating a longitudinal vortex that creates a localised depression. This in turn sucks the wake from the wheels to the outside of the aerodynamic underbody. Along with the side skirts that extend out from the sills, the vortex helps isolate the airflow from the underbody to boost its efficiency.

The solutions on the rear of the car are highly sophisticated, too. The tail section is now higher and the mobile spoiler extends further for a total increase in extension of 60mm when fully deployed. A vertical fin and a small wing each side of the tail act as guide vanes in the low drag configuration and boost the spoiler’s efficiency in the high downforce one. This system also creates considerable downforce at the rear of the car, allowing the use of an extreme diffusion volume for the rear diffuser which optimises air extraction from the underbody. The section of the flat underbody just ahead of the rear wheels is also exploited to the full to generate downforce thanks to the reduced pressure in the wheel arch guaranteed by the direct connection to the rear of the car by a by-pass duct.

The result is a 50% improvement in downforce in the low drag configuration and a 30% improvement in the more aggressive downforce configuration, resulting in a figure of 540 kg at 200 km/h.

Vehicle dynamics are further improved by the adoption of Pirelli slicks complete with sensors that monitor longitudinal, lateral and radial acceleration, as well as temperature and pressure. This ensures an accurate analysis of the interaction between the tyre and track surface, providing even more vital data to enable the traction control system to guarantee maximum performance.

The intervention level of the E-Diff electronic differential, F1-Trac traction control, Racing SSC (Side Slip Angle Control) - now specially calibrated to suit the car’s slick tyres - and the high-performance ABS can be controlled using the five-position Manettino on the steering wheel.
Sorry for the lack of updates. Changes will come soon I hope...

But for now here's your first huge crash that occured in the last lap of the first ever Formula E race that took place today on Bejing. We're not sure what Nicolas Prost was trying to do right there and we're not sure why he looked right while it was clear that if Nick was going to try an overtake it would have been definitely on the left. It was all for the Benefit of Lucas di Grassi who will be remembered for clinching the win at the first ever Formula E race, which by the way is called "ePrix".

Next race will take place in Malaysia on November 22nd.
Jon Hunt is a respected Ferrari collector who recently took delivery of his LaFerrari hypercar. His son Harry Hunt and some of his friends went for a nice road trip from London to Modena. But it was no ordinary road trip as the cars involved were none other than Ferrari's finest supercars from the last three decades: the 288GTO, F40, F50, Enzo and LaFerrari. At the end of their visit to modena, the cars stopped for a family picture at the Fiorano test track. Beautiful!
Students from the Technical University of Eindhoven and the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands are working on a hybrid prototype with the goal of breaking the overall Nürburgring Nordschleife lap time. Dubbed InMotion IN01, the prototype will have the hard task of breaking the time of 6:11 set by Stefan Bellof at the wheel of a Porsche 956 during Nürburgring 1000 kilometer's qualifying in 1983.

No technical details have been revealed yet but we'll be closely following the development of this ambitious project and we'd love to see the 30 years old record fall!

Based on the official pictures of LaFerrari, Sicilian student Daniel Pelligra designed this stunning Ferrari LMP1 racer. Dubbed Concept Prototype Cordero LMP1, the concept borrows LaFerrari's headlights and front splitter but also shares some design elements with the current LMP1 race cars from Porsche, Audi and Toyota.

While Ferrari's return to Le Mans is far from being confirmed, we can only hope that when they decide to take the challenge, their LMP1 car will just like Daniel's design!

McLaren officially revealed the 650S GT3 track focused model at the Goodwood festival of Speed. And we can safely say it's the best looking race car out there. The 650S features a more aerodynamically optimized body compared to the 12C-GT3 and also an upgraded suspension and engine. Current owners of the old spec 12C GT3 can also upgrade to the same specification as the new 650S GT3 since the cars share the same 3.8-liter V8.

Press release:

GT3 evolution featuring enhanced safety and optimised handling
CFD developed aerodynamic package with improved cooling
Limited production run to premiere on the grid for the 2015 season
Upgrade kit available to 12C GT3 owners to extend competitive life of existing cars

In the grounds of the famous Goodwood Estate, McLaren GT has today confirmed first details of the McLaren 650S GT3 – the latest generation track-focused racer which will contest GT3 championships across the globe from the 2015 season. Building on the highly successful 12C GT3, which has firmly re-established McLaren at the front of the GT grid over the past three seasons, the 650S GT3 was unveiled in front of fans and the global motorsport media at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

As the 12C GT3 continues claiming trophies around the world, the 650S GT3 has big shoes to fill, but it has been designed to do just that. The menacing and purposeful-looking racer is the second-generation GT3 car from McLaren GT, the GT race car building arm of McLaren, and follows in the slipstream of the 12C GT3, now competing in its third competitive season. To date, the 12C GT3 has secured three championship titles, 51 race victories and 71 further podiums, a number that continues to rise on a weekly basis, and currently leads the highly competitive Blancpain Endurance Series and the GT Asia championship.

Based on the recently unveiled McLaren 650S, and built around the same lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, the GT3 iteration has been honed using CFD technology and the latest in automotive and motorsport simulation to offer enhanced aerodynamics and improved levels of cooling. At the front, an aggressive splitter and larger air intakes dominate the purposeful new look, incorporating the familiar McLaren ‘face’ – albeit a more aggressive and menacing version, while on the flanks, the all-new lightweight carbon fibre bodywork wraps around reprofiled air intakes, which offer further optimised cooling. The fixed carbon fibre rear wing works in tandem with the large carbon fibre splitter to complete the management of air as it is worked across, through and beneath the sleek lines of the 650S GT3.

The road-going version has been designed and developed to provide ‘the ultimate in driver engagement on the road’, and the 650S GT3 uses this same approach. Revised suspension geometry, wider track and updates to the overall setup provide enhanced levels of drivability, optimising engagement for the wide range of drivers competing in GT racing. In addition, the updates have been made with added emphasis on endurance racing, pulling from the learnings over the past few years, and responding to feedback from the customer teams.

Reduced cost of ownership has been a priority during the design and development of the 650S GT3, and this has been achieved through extended component life, including increased engine and gearbox rebuild intervals, together with re-designed components and systems to reduce parts costs. Body panel design and fit have also been optimised which will not only minimise pit lane repair times but also aids weight distribution through the use of lighter components.

Increased levels of safety and refinement for the driver

Inside the cockpit, the 650S GT3 provides improved levels safety for the driver. Protection offered by the carbon fibre MonoCell chassis is further enhanced with the addition of an FIA-approved rollcage. Redesigned and lighter than that of the 12C GT3, the 650S GT3 rollcage provides a greater degree of driver comfort, with increased leg and headroom.

Another key area that has been optimised is the level of refinement, underlining the focus on endurance and driver engagement. As with its predecessor, the 650S GT3 is fitted with a bespoke motorsport digital dash display which sits behind the unique 650S GT3 steering wheel, inspired by the wheel design seen in the McLaren Mercedes Formula 1™ car. New to the 650S GT3 is a fully FIA-approved McLaren GT-developed race seat, fitted with a six-point race harness as standard. This seat offers increased levels of support and driver comfort through the use of bespoke moulded seat inserts.

The layout within the cockpit has been revised to make it even more driver-focused than previously. The seat is directly mounted to the chassis, and the steering wheel and all-new motorsport pedalbox are then adjustable to bring them closer to the driver. The centre console is also developed from the latest 12C GT3 interior, reducing complexity, and features a membrane-type switch panel for ease of use. In addition to this, improvements have been made to further optimise ventilation and driver cooling.

Award-winning technology, optimised cooling

The 650S GT3 is equipped with the latest generation of the award-winning, 3.8-litre McLaren V8 twin turbo ‘M838T’ engine. Race-prepared and including a McLaren-developed ECU offering increased functionality to incorporate turbo boost and transmission shift control, the engine is coupled to an all-new six-speed sequential motorsport transmission. The 650S GT3 produces around 500PS – the same power as the 12C GT3, which is controlled by the FIA’s Balance of Performance (BOP) regulations. Cooling is improved through larger 650S intakes within the front bumper and re-profiled side intakes. In addition to this, the gearbox oil cooler has been relocated, now incorporated into the larger side intakes, giving the rear of the car a cleaner, more aerodynamic flow.

Race tuned with increased grip

The 650S GT3 uses an all-new race-tuned suspension system with a 52mm wider track than the 12C GT3. The front suspension also allows the fitment of the latest generation larger diameter racing tyres . In conjunction with the optimised aerodynamic package, this provides increased levels of front-end grip and steering feel on turn-in. Newly designed forged aluminium wheels (front - 12.5” x 18”, rear – 13” x 18”) are held in place with a single wheel retaining nut on motorsport axles, while a revised hub bearing assembly and extended-life suspension components are another example of a simplified service item, and reduced maintenance costs.

Behind the new design eight-spoke wheels, and bringing the power, aerodynamics and downforce under control is a newly-developed braking system with monoblock six-piston callipers on the front, and four-piston on the rear, with ventilated discs (380 x 35mm front / 355 x 32mm rear).

Existing owners can upgrade

The 650S GT3 development programme has pulled significant data from the findings and lessons learned from the 12C GT3 programme. Testing of the 650S GT3 will continue throughout the summer with customer car production commencing in the autumn. Pricing for the 650S GT3 has been confirmed – £330,000 ex works, plus tax.

Existing owners of the 12C GT3 are also able to benefit from the updates and enhancements offered by the 650S GT3, due to the use of the shared chassis structure and award winning engine. This upgrade package further extends the life of existing 12C GT3 cars allowing them to continue racing competitively through a second GT racing life cycle. For many McLaren GT3 owners this allows them to race their existing car for an average of six seasons.

Around 15 examples of the 650S GT3 are planned to be produced and delivered for the start of the 2015 season. With the optional upgrade package for 12C GT3, this could see an additional 15 cars running the new design from next season.

Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer, McLaren Automotive:

‘The McLaren 650S GT3 is to GT racing what the 650S is to McLaren Automotive, with the new car improving on all areas of a strong existing product, and making it more engaging at the same time. It shares the heart and soul of its road-going sibling with the same 3.8-litre twin turbo engine and the carbon fibre chassis, but turns things up to 11 in terms of aerodynamics. It is truly fit for purpose, but is now accessible to an even wider breadth of abilities and, as with the road car, it provides unprecedented levels of comfort, safety and driver engagement.’

Andrew Kirkaldy, Managing Director, McLaren GT:

‘The 650S GT3 is a natural progression of an already successful racer, but we have looked at all the different areas where we could possibly make even the slightest incremental improvement. The revised aerodynamic profile looks much more purposeful, and we have managed to incorporate increased levels of cooling without any detriment to performance. A big step forward has also been made in terms of servicing the car, which can be the difference between a race win and finishing off the podium, and the cost of running a car at a competitive level, and this becomes more important the longer and more demanding the event. By simplifying maintenance

and repair processes, and cutting down the time and costs involved, the 650S GT3 will be even more competitive at the longer endurance events with time required in the pitlane reduced to a minimum. ‘

‘Throughout the development programme, we have focused on making the 650S GT3 even more enjoyable and engaging to drive for the wide range of drivers that are competing in GT racing around the world. With a broader envelope of performance, which is easier to access, more drivers will be able to exploit the true potential of the 650S GT3. One example is with the wider track, which gives greater levels of grip and improves handling.’

Chris Goodwin, Chief Test Driver, McLaren Automotive:

‘This is a car that is improving on a race-winning formula, and is designed and built to offer even greater levels of driver involvement, but also to be easier to drive. This is a crucial factor in any racing car, but especially with long-distance and endurance racing, where drivers can double or even triple stint, where we compete on a huge variety of circuits and where weather and track conditions vary regularly throughout a race.

‘GT racing attracts a wide variety of drivers - from the best and most experienced professionals in the world to ambitious amateurs and young developing talents. If the car is easy to drive and gives good feedback as you approach and sometimes exceed the limit, the driver will be better able to drive consistently, error free and extract more out of the car lap after lap. This is key for professional race winner as much as it is for the amateur racers that are making up increasingly large proportions of the grids around the world. It is the result of continuous development, both in terms of the work carried out by the McLaren GT design and development team, but it also takes the learnings from the thousands of laps, from countless circuits across the globe which have been completed by the 12C GT3 with our highly-successful, race winning customer teams. Real-world data and feedback from the teams gives us a much clearer understanding of what the cars go through which no simulator can provide. As such, the 650S GT3 will be just as competitive in the right hands, but more forgiving for the less experienced drivers that are being attracted to the exciting GT3 championships around the world.

‘The 12C GT3 was the first iteration of a GT car from McLaren, and was, and still is competing and winning on a regular basis. The 650S GT3 is now our second generation model, and it is up against more established rivals, many of which are on to the third, or in some cases, fourth. Just as we face in the road car market. Despite this, McLaren is still the brand to beat.’

What’s in a number? 59 - a winning pedigree

The car unveiled carries the Goodwood Festival of Speed theme of ‘addicted to winning’, with its livery including the number 59. The number was carried by the now legendary McLaren F1 GTR chassis #01R at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, and claimed victory in the gruelling test of endurance on its debut – a feat that had never been achieved previously, and has not been repeated since. Deliveries of the 650S GT3 will commence from late 2014, and the competitive debut with customer teams in GT3-homologated series will start in 2015, 20 years on from the famous race victory.
This year's 24 Hours of the Nurburgring was a fantastic race as always and poorly covered by the media as always. But that doesn't matter because the fans enjoyed the free but not perfect live stream on Youtube. It seems that nothing has changed since the circuit got recently purchased, which many judge as a good thing.

About the results, it seems that it's a very good year for Audi since the Audi backed Phoenix Team running the R8 LMS Ultra race car #4 won the famous 24 hours race, just a week after the Audi Team Joest won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The leading car with René Rast at the wheel finished in the same lap as the #1 Black Falcon Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 which finished 2.59 behind. The #22 Rowe Racing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 completed the third march of the podium with a 2 laps gap.

Fourth was the #44 Falken Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R 997. The #7 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 and the #20 BMW Z4 GT3 kept battling for the fifth spot until the very last lap for the amusement of the fans. A battle that took end at the Carousel due to traffic.

There was a total of 165 participants in this year's race with 110 of them reaching the chequered flag. The winning car completed 159 Laps, 4,035 km which is an all time new record for a N24 winner. It's also the first time that the winning car covers more than 4,000 Km.

We are already looking forward to next year's edition with a lot of new comers like Bentley and Dodge. You can find the hourly results (or Ergebnisse!) in PDF format here.

Another couple of weeks, another Vision GT concept car. This time it's Nissan's turn to join the Vision Gran Turismo project with another futuristic design study. Dubbed Concept 2020 Vision GT, the car features very aggressive lines with distinctive yet familiar taillights that remind us of the R390 GT race car. It also features some design cues borrowed from the current GT-R which leads us to think that it might be an inspiration for the R36 GT-R model.

There's no word if a real life model of the car will be made but players of GT6 will have the chance to take its wheel next month as it will be added to the game in a future update. As for the Volkswagen GTI spyder unveiled last month, you can expect it to pop up tomorrow since Polyphony Digital's online servers will be down for two hours for a scheduled maintenance.
What a great race it was! The 24 Hours of Le Mans proved its self once again as one of the best races of the year. The 2014's edition saw an epic battle between Porsche, Toyota and Audi. Each one the three giant constructors looked like a winner at some point of the race.
After Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo gave the drivers the chequered flag last year, it was Fernando Alonso's turn to wave the French flag at the start of this year's race. This strengthens the possibility that Ferrari might consider entering Le Mans with a LMP1 prototype in the near future. But this is just speculation since Ferrari is already involved in Le Mans racing in the LM GTE Pro category. With that said, back to the race!
During the first part of the race, Toyota built a solid lead thanks to Audi's and Porsche's troubles but especially thanks to its powerful TS040 Hybrid racer which was clearly the fastest among the three.

Toyota #7 (A. Wurz, 134 laps), Audi #2 second (M. Fässler, 134 laps), Audi #1 third (M. Toyota dominated the race throughout the night but then came the time for the Japanese automaker to have its share of troubles. Audi took the lead of the 24 Hours race after overtaking the leading Toyota which stopped at Arnage. Porsche was following close behind but with a clearly slower car.

Nakajima in leading #7 Toyota stopped at Arnage - passed by Treluyer in #2 Audi #LM24
— 24hours_Live (@24hours_Live) June 15, 2014

The dawn lights brought us a new leader as Nakajima's Toyota TS040 Hybrid #7 officially retired.
With the leading Toyota out of the race, things were looking good again for Tom Kristensen in the Audi #1 who might be running for his thenth Le Mans win! Until...

The AUDI #1 rejoins after 17min 36sec, Lucas DI GRASSI replaces Tom KRISTENSEN. #LM24
— 24hours_Live (@24hours_Live) June 15, 2014

Within four hours from the arrival, the Audi #1 driven by T. Kristensen had to go back to the pit for a turbo change which cost the team more than 17 minutes. Meanwhile, the Porsche 919 Hybrid number #20 took the lead for a very short period of time, followed by the Audi R18 E-tron number #2 which was on average 5 seconds faster.

The Porsche seemed to have a really strong chance of finishing ahead since the more efficient 919 Hybrid required less pit stops. That was the case until, Mark's Porsche was hit by technical problems and had to enter the pits once again. It was the end of the race for the Porsche #20.

During that time, the Audi #2 took the lead followed by the Audi #1 and the Porsche #14. At this stage, it looked like nothing would stop Audi from claiming its 13th Le Mans victory. Sadly, the number #14 Porsche had to join the pits too, allowing the Toyota #8 to come back from far behind and occupy the 3rd spot.

The two Audi's then cruised together to the finishing line offering Audi its thirteenth overall Le Mans win and making it once step closer to Porsche all time record of 16 wins. Toyota once again failed to win after showing some real potential and the Swiss Rebellion racing team's Toyota R-One belonging to the LMP1-L sub category finished fourth.

Team Jota Sport won the LMP2 category's race with the Nissan powered Zytek Z11SN which crossed the line with O. TURVEY at the wheel.

In LM GTE Gro, it was Team AF Corse' Ferrari 458 Italia which crossed the line in 1st place with G. BRUNI at the wheel while ASTON MARTIN RACING's V8 Vantage completed the race at the top of the LM GTE Am category with K. Poulsen at the wheel.

It was a great race from Audi. But we're already excited about next year's race because we are sure that Porsche and Toyota won't accept their defeat. Next year, Nissan will be joining the show which means that we might be witnessing another golden era of Le Mans racing.
Toyota looks closer than ever to its first ever Le Mans win and the second ever for a Japanese car. The TS040 Hybrid #7 driven by Alexander WURZ, Stéphane SARRAZIN and Kazuki NAKAJIMA set the pole position with a time of 3:21.789, a new record for the Circuit de La Sarthe in its current configuration.

But the returning Porsche Team also looked strong during the qualifying practice. Car #14 driven by Romain DUMAS, Neel JANI and Marc LIEB fell just 3 tenths of a second short of the pole position time. The car will start in second position and can be a real threat for the #7 Toyota.

The number 8 Toyota TS040 driven by Anthony DAVIDSON, Nicolas LAPIERRE, Sébastien BUEMI and the number 20 Porsche 919H driven by Timo BERNHARD, Mark WEBBER, Brendon HARTLEY occupy respectively the third and fourth grid positions.

Surprisingly, the more experienced Audi team looked a bit slower than its main rivals. But we all know that raw speed isn't enough to win a 24 Hours race. But consistency and reliability can be the key. So Audi's mature package might have an advantage compared to Porsche and Toyota's sophisticated new hybrid race cars.

Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen's #1 Audi R18 TDI E-Tron Quattro will start from seventh position after being totally rebuilt following Loic Duval's crash. The latter will not take part in Saturday's race and was replaced by Marc Gené.

Swiss REBELLION racing team showed real improvements during qualifying and their times finally fell above 3 minutes 30 seconds. However, the red Toyota R-One was still at least 4 seconds slower than the closest LMP1 competitor.
